‘Phantom’s’ Crawford Pulls Disappearing Act: Michael Crawford missed his first performances as the Ahmanson Theatre’s “Phantom of the Opera” Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon due to “a slight case of the flu,” according to a spokeswoman for the production. Understudy Norman Large, who normally plays the smaller of two opera company managers, Monsieur Andre, went on in his place. It was “frightening but exciting,” said Large of the Wednesday performance. Theatergoers were informed of the change by a sign in the lobby and a program insert. The spokeswoman reported that no one requested a refund, at least on Wednesday; none will be given in any event. At press time, Crawford’s ability to perform the role Thursday evening or tonight was unknown.
