LOCAL : Murderer Gets Death Sentence
Convicted murderer Philip Dean Carter was sentenced to death today in the San Quentin gas chamber moments after listening to pleas from relatives of his victims that they be allowed to watch him die.
Carter, 34, who sat impassively in a Santa Monica courtroom during the sentencing, was convicted last summer in the 1984 murders of Jillette Leonora Mills and her roommate, Susan Knoll, in Culver City. He was also convicted in the death of Bonnie Ann Guthrie in West Los Angeles and for the rapes of Mills and Guthrie and burglaries of property from all three victims. Convicted of another rape in Ventura, Carter still faces trial in the deaths of Tok Chum Kim in Oakland and Janette Ann Cullins in San Diego and the rape of another woman, also in San Diego.
