THE SIDELINES : Magic Tops All-Star Game Voting
NEW YORK — Lakers guard Magic Johnson, the all-time leader in assists in NBA All-Star competition, is the top vote-getter among Western Conference players in balloting to determine the starters for this season’s All-Star Game.
The league said today that Johnson had received 31,771 votes in fan balloting for the 40th All-Star Game, to be played Feb. 11 at Miami. In eight previous All-Star appearances, Johnson has 111 assists.
Derek Harper of the Dallas Mavericks is second among West guards with 16,212 votes.
The leaders at forward are James Worthy of the Lakers with 26,849 votes and Kelly Tripucka of the Charlotte Hornets with 25,979. Houston’s Akeem Olajuwon tops the West centers with 26.047 votes, followed by rookie David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs with 17,809.
