4 Slain in Bavarian Tavern; Police Kill Gunman, Seize 2nd
FRANKFURT, West Germany — Two gunmen shot and killed four men in a German tavern, kidnaped a woman, then led police on a chase ending in a shoot-out that left one of the gunmen dead.
The crime spree began Saturday when the two gunmen killed four men at a bar in the Bavarian town of Laaber and wounded two others after demanding money from them, police said Sunday.
Police said the gunmen, believed to be convicted robbers who had escaped from an Austrian prison, fled in a car stolen in Austria.
In the 185-mile chase that followed, the gunmen escaped from a garage where police had cornered them and kidnaped a 26-year-old woman from her home near Neumarkt, Bavaria, escaping in her car, police said.
Police finally caught up with the men late Saturday south of Frankfurt. In the resulting shoot-out, one of the gunmen was killed and the other was wounded, police said.
