Runaways Retrospective From Currie, Pandoras
“Oh God, I can’t believe I’m up here doing this!” yelped former Runaways frontwoman Cherie Currie, as she was about to lead local female rockas the Pandoras through a four-song, greatest-hit Runaways retrospective at the Music Machine.
Currie, who recently penned a tell-almost bio of teenstar excess (“Neon Angel”), wavered Friday between a vacant professionalism reminiscent of “Saturday Night Live’s” Sweeny Sisters and her original crotch-pumpin’ stage presence, doffing her appliqued denim jacket to deliver “Cherry Bomb” stripped to her trademark bustier.
It wuz sloppy, of course. Along with adding a second guitarist, head Pandora Paula Pierce has apparently been wearin’ out the ol’ AC/DC records these days. It also wasn’t supposed to be any real BIG DEAL, seeing as how the evening was intended to celebrate the release of the “Slipping Through the Cracks” video compilation of 16 mostly L.A. indie acts, roughly nine of which--notably the tough-as-leather Droogs--played short sets that night.
