NAMES IN THE NEWS : Libel Payoff Makes Clint’s Day
LONDON — A British tabloid made Clint Eastwood’s day, agreeing to pay the actor libel damages for publishing what it conceded were lies about his private life.
The amount of the settlement from News Group Newspapers, publishers of the New of The World weekly, was not disclosed in proceedings today at the High Court in London.
Eastwood’s lawyer said the money will be given to charity.
The lawyer, Michael Skrein, told the court the newspaper pledged not to repeat the lies contained in articles published in July that had “greatly wronged” Eastwood.
Details of the libelous articles could not be repeated publicly.
