WORLD : 3 Dead in Crash of AF Tanker Jet
PERTH-ANDOVER, Canada — A U.S. Air Force tanker jet with four people aboard apparently exploded in the air and crashed in the woods just above the American border today, killing at least three crewmen.
The Air Force said the fourth crewman was missing and feared dead.
“It was unbelievable,” said Paul McNally, a resident and small-plane pilot who said he saw an explosion light up the predawn sky. “I’ve never seen anything like it--it was like fireworks.”
The KC-135 was returning to Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, from a refueling mission when it went down about 6 a.m. and set woods on fire near Perth-Andover, a New Brunswick community of about 1,900.
