Herman Malamood; Operatic Tenor
Herman Malamood, 57, a tenor with the New York City Opera Company when that organization appeared annually in Los Angeles a decade ago and who also sang with the Metropolitan Opera and with companies in Europe. Malamood was born in New York and studied there. His first major opera was “Pagliacci” in Philadelphia in 1970, where he replaced Richard Tucker, another one-time cantor. Over the years he performed in Vienna and Tel Aviv and in 1982 replaced Luciano Pavarotti in the title role of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” at the Met. He sang with the New York City Opera Company for eight years. On Sept. 23 at his New York City home of cancer.
