NATION : 50 Students See Fatal Shooting
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A custodian was fatally shot in front of more than 50 children in an elementary school cafeteria today, and shots were fired at more children on the playground before the gunman was caught, police said.
No children were injured at Killearn Lakes Elementary, but there was “total pandemonium for a short period of time,” said Leon County Undersheriff Larry Campbell.
A man taken into custody shortly after the shooting is either a custodian or former custodian of the school, Campbell said.
After entering the school through the kitchen, a man with a .22-caliber rifle shot the victim from across the cafeteria, Campbell said. More than 50 children were in the room.
The gunman then left the building the same way, firing in the direction of children on the playground before getting into his car and driving away, Campbell said. He was arrested a short time later.
