Katella Weathers Webster’s Big Game
Mike Webster of Costa Mesa High Schoolrushed for 202 yards in 12 carries, but Katella ran off with a 26-13 victory in a nonleague game Friday at Glover Stadium.
Katella improved to 2-1-1; Costa Mesa is 0-4.
The Mustangs outgained Katella, 254 to 163 yards. Webster scored on an 80-yard run with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter and had another run of 75 yards.
Katella opened the scoring with a safety in the first quarter when Costa Mesa punter Glenn Maldonado fumbled a bad snap in the end zone and was tackled. Three plays later, Katella running back Bond Ren (12 carries for 75 yards) scored on a 37-yard run down the right sideline.
Early in the second quarter, Katella declined a holding penalty against Costa Mesa and moments later quarterback Duby Ospina completed a 75-yard pass to wide receiver David Phillips, which placed the ball at Katella’s 12-yard line. Five plays later, Tony Hoover ran the ball in from the 1-yard line for Costa Mesa’s first touchdown.
Running back Greg Sawyer (17 carries for 79 yards) scored for Katella on an 18-yard run around the left side late in the first half.
