An era in television sports ends today.
After 32 seasons and 981 games, NBC will broadcast its final “Game of the Week” for at least four years, with the Toronto Blue Jays playing host to the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a three-game series to decide the American League East title at 11:30 a.m. (4)(36)(39). CBS outbid NBC for the rights to major-league baseball beginning next season, but will only show 12 regular season games.
ABC will telecast Sunday’s Blue Jays-Orioles game at noon if it has a bearing on the pennant race.
Former Angel Nolan Ryan and the Texas Rangers provide the opposition as the Angels play their final televised game of the season tonight at 7 p.m. on Channel 5. The Dodgers conclude their third losing season in the past four years with two games against the Atlanta Braves on cable’s TBS, today at 4:05 p.m. and Sunday at 11:05 a.m.
On the 50th anniversary of the first college football telecast (Waynesburg College, Pa., vs. Fordham), there are eight live broadcasts to the Southland, including 11th-rated USC beginning its defense of the Pacific 10 Conference title against unbeaten, No. 19 Washington State at 12:30 p.m. (7)(3)(10)(42).
In professional football, the Rams and San Francisco 49ers meet in a battle of unbeatens Sunday at 1 p.m. on Channel 2.
And for something completely different, Prime Ticket will telecast the Victorian Football League Grand Final, Australian Rules football’s Super Bowl, at 7 tonight on a 22-hour delayed basis.
