Huntington Beach : Developer Will Place Time Capsule at Site
A time capsule that will be buried next week in the heart of the city’s downtown will give Huntington Beach residents in the year 2089 a chance to view the trends and styles of the 1980s.
The capsule will be placed in a mosaic fountain at the site of the not-yet completed Pierside Pavilion, at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway. When the pavilion opens in 1990, the $23-million, four-story complex will house specialty shops, restaurants and a six-screen movie theater.
Among the items the capsule will include will be a string bikini, the city charter, a barrel of oil and a California raisin statue.
“We are helping the city to grow and change,” said Uri Gati of California Resorts/Haseko Associates, the developer of Pierside Pavilion. “But we wanted to keep the city’s past very much present and remember it for future generations.”
