San Clemente Man Wins $31,725 Surfing Prize
Christian Fletcher of San Clemente earned the largest first-place prize in surfing history Sunday by winning the $100,000 Body Glove Surf Bout at Camp Pendleton’s Lower Trestles.
Fletcher, 19, won $31,725 by defeating North Hollywood’s Joey Jenkins, Cardiff’s Colin Smith (24th seed) and San Clemente’s Noah Budroe (seventh seed) in the final.
Top-seeded Dino Andino of San Clemente finished fifth, maintaining his overall ratings lead with three tournaments remaining on the 11-city Bud Light U.S. Pro Surfing Tour.
Mike Stewart of Hawaii won the largest payoff ($5,000) ever in bodyboarding by defeating Irvine’s Pat Caldwell, Imperial Beach’s Jackie Fisher and Honolulu’s Ben Severson in the final of the Easy Rider Bodyboard Division.
MEN’S SOCCER
The University of San Diego defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, to win the U.S. International tournament with a 2-0 record. The Toreros (4-1) beat Cal, 6-2, on Friday.
In the second half against Dominguez Hills, USD’s Tom Crane took a pass from Trong Nguyen (named the tournament’s outstanding defensive player), went one-on-one against the goalie and scored the winning goal off the right post.
Jason Pearson, who scored the first goal, was named the offensive player of the tournament.
Cal defeated USIU, 2-1, in the other match. Chris George scored for the Gulls.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
UC San Diego opened its season with a 3-0 victory over USIU (0-2). Felicia Faro, Toni Krumme and Katy Dulock scored for the Tritons.
YACHTING
The San Diego Yacht Club’s Chris Calkins skippered Flambouyant to victory in the SDYC’s Navy Trophy race on San Diego Bay with a time of two hours 18.33 seconds.
