Bush Shows Off a Fish, Yes, but It Wasn’t His
KENNEBUNKPORT, Me. — It looked as though President Bush had finally caught a fish.
He called media chase boats over to his speedboat Thursday to photograph him holding a tiny pollack, indicating that it didn’t really count because it was barely bigger than his lure. Still, it seemed that the President’s bad-luck fishing streak had been broken.
But today, his staff revealed the truth. It was a friend who caught the fish on Bush’s boat Thursday evening, and the photographers misunderstood because the President was holding it up.
The fishing trip Thursday extended a streak of a fortnight with nary a catch for the President.
His reputation as an angler in serious trouble, Bush threw down the gauntlet earlier in the day. “Between now and when I leave on Monday, I guarantee you, I positively guarantee you that this jinx will be broken,” Bush told reporters.
Media representatives wore T-shirts reading “Fish Watch” with a circled fish and a line through it indicating no fish.
