Pete Rose’s troubles have made a recluse out of his mother.

LaVerne Rose Noeth, 74, said in a Washington Post interview that she has rarely left her Cincinnati apartment since the scandal broke that her son, Cincinnati Reds manager and baseball’s all-time hits leader, may have bet on his own team.

“I am a wreck, a total wreck,” Noeth said. “I have a right to be, don’t you think? After all, I’m Pete Rose’s mother.”

Noeth said her daughter is nagging her to get out of the house. But Noeth is afraid to see people she knows.

“I’m afraid they’ll say something about Pete and I’ll get mad,” she said. “I’ve got a fiery temper.”
