Reuschel and Stewart Start for All-Stars
ANAHEIM — Rick Reuschel of the San Francisco Giants and Dave Stewart of the Oakland Athletics were named today to start Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.
Reuschel is 12-3 with a 2.12 earned-run average, third in the National League.
Stewart, 13-4, with a 3.24 ERA, was chosen to start over Texas’ Nolan Ryan even though Stewart pitched Saturday and Ryan has not pitched since Thursday.
New York Mets third baseman Howard Johnson was picked by NL Manager Tom Lasorda to replace Mike Schmidt in the lineup. Schmidt was elected by fans even though he retired in May.
Lasorda chose Cincinnati center fielder Eric Davis to replace Darryl Strawberry of the New York Mets, who is using the All-Star break to rest his broken toe.
Ruben Sierra of the Texas Rangers was picked by American League Manager Tony La Russa to start in right field in place of Jose Canseco, who was elected by fans even though he has been on the disabled list since spring training. Sierra is batting .330 with 14 homers and a league-leading 65 RBIs.
Harold Baines of the Chicago White Sox and Pedro Guerrero of the St. Louis Cardinals will be the designated hitters, the first in All-Star history.
Left fielder Bo Jackson of Kansas City, appearing in his first All-Star Game, will lead off for the AL. Boston third baseman Wade Boggs will bat second and Minnesota center fielder Kirby Puckett will bat third.
Baines will bat fourth, Texas second baseman Julio Franco fifth and Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken sixth.
Sierra will bat seventh, Oakland first baseman Mark McGwire eighth and Athletics catcher Terry Steinbach ninth.
St. Louis shortstop Ozzie Smith will lead off for the NL, San Diego right fielder Tony Gwynn will bat second and Giants first baseman Will Clark third.
Kevin Mitchell of San Francisco, who leads the majors with 31 homers and 81 RBIs, will bat cleanup and play left field.
Davis, playing in center, will bat fifth and Johnson sixth.
Guerrero will bat seventh, followed by Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg and San Diego catcher Benito Santiago.
