Flamingoes at Risk as Iranian Lake Dries Up

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Iranian wildlife officials might have to move more than 5,000 flamingo chicks 400 miles because the lake where they hatched is rapidly drying up, Tehran Radio said Thursday.
It said the officials were puzzled as to why more than 15,000 flamingoes had bred at Namak (Salt) Lake, south of Tehran, instead of flying as usual to Lake Urumiyeh, near the Turkish border.
Namak is drying up rapidly, and the chicks, hatched between 10 and 20 days ago, might have to be moved to Lake Urumiyeh.
