Community College Tennis : Unseeded Fenske Wins Twice for Saddleback
Gavin Fenske, an unseeded singles player from Saddleback College, pulled off two upsets Friday in the Southern California community college men’s tennis tournament at Mt. San Antonio College.
Fenske rallied to defeat No. 3 seeded Darin Pleasant of Moorpark, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6. Fenske defeated seventh-seeded John Gabriel of Orange Coast, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16 earlier Friday.
Fenske will play teammate Ed Peregrino in the semifinals today at 8:30 a.m. Peregrino is seeded second.
Carl Hinds of Saddleback, the fourth-seeded player, takes on top-seeded Billy Mills of Santa Barbara in the other semifinal match. The winners meet in the singles final at 11 a.m.
Hinds defeated Eric Rebitzer of OCC, 7-6, 1-6, 6-0, and Peregrino defeated Lance Kronberg of Santa Barbara, 7-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Saddleback also has a team in each of the semifinal doubles matches.
Hinds and Peregrino defeated Anthony Cortez and Chan Ly of Long Beach, 6-2, 6-2, in one quarterfinal match. Jamil Atacha and Stan Sanders defeated Rebitzer and Gabriel of OCC, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
