Las Vegas Women, Fresno State Men Win Track Titles

Carrie Franklin of Nevada Las Vegas became the first person in Big West Conference history to win five events in a single meet while leading the Rebels to the women’s title Friday night in the Big West track and field championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

UNLV won the two-day meet with 178.5 points. Fresno State was second with 147, and UC Irvine finished third with 107.5.

In men’s competition, Fresno State won its seventh title in a row with 207 points. UC Irvine was second with 122, and Cal State Long Beach was third with 120.

Utah State’s Craig Carter, who won the discus and hammer throw and placed second in the shotput, was named men’s athlete of the meet.

Franklin, a senior, won the 100 meters in 11.76 seconds, the 100-meter hurdles in 13.98 and the 200 in 23.86; she also ran the second leg on the winning 400-meter relay team and the first leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay team.

Franklin was named the women’s co-athlete of the meet with UC Irvine’s Beth McGrann, who won her second consecutive Big West 10,000-meter title Thursday and her fourth straight 5,000-meter title Friday.
