Davis Phinney finally broke through, and Greg LeMond ended more than a week of frustration in the eighth stage of the Tour de Trump bicycle race.

Phinney had been edged in sprints four times by Belgium’s Eric Vanderaerden in the last week. But he came out of the center of a large pack to win the 67.2-mile Arlington Circuit Race by a half wheel-length in 2 hours 31 minutes 25 seconds.

Michael Zanoli of the Netherlands finished second, and LeMond, recovering from the flu he contracted four days ago, placed third for his first top-three finish in the 10-day event. Both were given the same time as Phinney.

Phinney’s teammate, Dag Otto Lauritzen of Norway, picked up five bonus seconds during a midrace sprint on the 4.2-mile loop and increased his overall lead over Henk Lubberding of the Netherlands to 28 seconds.

Vanderaerden, who had won three straight races, did not gain any bonus time and remained in third place, 1:10 behind Lauritzen.
