Man Killed Trying to Detain Car Burglar
An ABC television employee was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Los Feliz restaurant by a car burglar he tried to detain until police could arrive, authorities said Friday.
Wayne Gibbs, 58, of Los Angeles was leaving a McDonald’s restaurant at Sunset Boulevard and Fountain Avenue about 8 p.m. Thursday when he came upon a man breaking into his car, Detective Sam Jacobellis said.
Gibbs was shot when he tried to hold the suspect until police could be summoned, Jacobellis said.
He was taken to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
Gibbs was an employee at the nearby ABC Television Center, where he had worked as a field engineer for 40 years, Jacobellis said. The ABC studios are located less than a mile from the shooting site.
