WORLD : $50 Million Aid Pledged Nicaragua
STOCKHOLM — European nations today pledged $50 million in new aid to war-battered Nicaragua, breaking what has hitherto been a virtual credit embargo by the Western world.
The money, which the leftist government will use to pay off part of its debt, is well short of the $250 million Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega said last month is needed to put the country back on its feet.
But Nicaraguan Minister of Planning and Budget Alejandro Martinez Cuenca told a news conference he is satisfied.
The United States, Britain and the World Bank all declined invitations to the conference.
