May Department Stores Co.: The St. Louis-based retailer posted a 1.6% gain in earnings to $63 million for the first quarter on an 18% sales gain to $2.6 billion. During the quarter, the company opened 17 new stores. “We are very pleased with our sales and earnings increases for the first quarter and are encouraged by the good start for 1989,” said David C. Farrell, chairman and chief executive.
