Local News in Brief : Seaside Complex Wins One Key Vote
A proposal to turn the site of the former Pike Amusement Park in Long Beach into a $1-billion seaside development of office buildings, residences, hotel rooms and shops won one of several key approvals Thursday from the city Planning Commission.
While expressing concerns about increased traffic congestion caused by the 13-acre complex, the commission voted 6 to 1 to approve zoning changes and an amendment to the Local Coastal Plan that would allow Pike Properties Associates to build the single largest development ever proposed in the city. The developers--a partnership of Ratkovich Co. and Enterprise Development West--still have to obtain approvals from the City Council and the Coastal Commission.
The complex, stretching along the shore just south of downtown, would include 3.3 million square feet of space. Ground-breaking is scheduled for the spring of 1990.
