The Arizona House of Representatives has approved a state holiday honoring slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., leaving final action up to the Senate, where proponents say passage is likely.

The bill, which designates the third Monday of each January as Martin Luther King Civil Rights Day, was passed by the House on a 35-24 vote Thursday.

Former Republican Gov. Evan Mecham was criticized in 1987 for rescinding a holiday honoring King.
