A resolution recommending that the controversial practice of pledging be banned was defeated by fraternity leaders meeting in Burlingame. The defeat came despite a September endorsement of the non-binding resolution by the Fraternity Executives Assn., whose 58 fraternities represent 200,000 undergraduate members of fraternities at 600 major U.S. colleges. After an hour of emotional speeches, the resolution failed 28 to 22 during the National Interfraternity Conference’s annual meeting of the House of Delegates. The proposal would have allowed applicants to immediately become members without a “pledge period.”
