Animal Exploitation
In the fashion feature “Furs” (Nov. 18), Bettijane Levine states that “most men and women still think there’s nothing more luxurious, more sensuous, more conspicuously rich looking than an elegant fur coat.” They’re conspicuous all right, but not for the reasons she suggests.
Several public opinion polls show that, contrary to what Levine states, a majority of Americans oppose killing animals for their fur. But publications promoting the idea that the “perfect set of pelts can announce your arrival, establish your station and even make your introductions without a spoken word” make it doubly difficult to educate the many who continue to buy furs.
