College Basketball : Late Cal Lutheran Explosion Sinks La Verne, 98-88
Cal Lutheran scored 8 consecutive points in a 20-second span late in the second half as the Kingsmen defeated La Verne, 98-88, in a nonconference basketball game Tuesday at Cal Lutheran.
The crucial swing occurred with 1:31 to play and La Verne behind, 86-80, after trailing by 13 at halftime. With Cal Lutheran’s Steve deLaveaga at the free-throw line, an irritated La Verne Coach Gary Stewart was hit with 2 technicals. Jeff Logsdon hit all 4 foul shots, deLaveaga was good on his 2 and the Kingsmen scored on their subsequent possession.
The surge gave Cal Lutheran a 94-80 lead and the Kingsmen went on to their fourth win in 6 decisions. Cal Lutheran began last season 0-7.
Blake Miraglia had a team-high 31 points, Mike Demeter added 24 points and deLaveaga had 23 for the Kingsmen. Mike Miller had 13 rebounds.
WOMEN
Valley 76, Antelope Valley 64--Sandrine Rocher scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds for Valley (5-2) in a nonconference game at Antelope Valley.
Cal Lutheran 67, La Verne 62--Brenda Lee scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Regals in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran. Heidi Griffith added 18 points for Cal Lutheran (2-0). La Verne is 1-2.
Occidental 73, Master’s 56--Senior center Joelle Orton scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers (1-4) at home.
