The State : Hunt for More Bodies Fails
Tipped by a witness who said she saw a woman doing midnight digging, Sacramento police excavated part of a vacant lot near a boardinghouse yard where seven bodies were buried but found no evidence of human remains. About a dozen officials dug for less than an hour in the rear of the weed-covered lot across the street from the house of landlady Dorothea Montalvo Puente, 59, who has been charged with murder in connection with the seven corpses. Police believe the victims were killed for their Social Security checks. Capt. Michael O’Kane said investigators were led to the lot by a witness who “came forward” and said she saw a woman digging in the area “between 11 p.m. and midnight last April.”
