PORTLAND —  Democrat Michael S. Dukakis defeated Republican George Bush to capture the state’s seven electoral votes.

With 42% of the vote counted, Dukakis had 179,392 votes, or 52%, to Bush’s 165,662 votes, or 48%. Dukakis battled tradition to win; Oregon has voted Republican in nine of the last 10 presidential races.

A proposed smoking ban that would have given Oregon the nation’s toughest anti-smoking law was rejected by voters.

With 36 percent of the ballots counted, the measure was rejected by 210,907 votes, or 61%, to 135,862, or 39%.

Although many jurisdictions have passed anti-smoking laws, Oregon’s proposal would have been the strictest in the nation because it would have wiped out designated smoking areas and imposed an outright ban on smoking in virtually all indoor work areas and enclosed places frequented by the public. Violators would have faced a $250 fine.
