Palestinians in Lebanon buried 19 people killed in Israel’s most destructive air raid of the year and subsequent ground fighting, then fled as Israeli warplanes streaked low overhead but did not attack. The dead were taken by small funeral processions to the main cemetery of the southern port of Sidon and a Palestinian graveyard in the nearby village of Darb es Sim after Muslim noon prayers. Sirens wailed as mourners started home to the Miye ou Miye refugee camp, target of the air raid. Guerrillas and civilians scattered, ducking for cover as two jets flashed past. The Palestine Liberation Organization had planned mass funerals for the 19, but a guerrilla officer said plans were changed because “we just couldn’t risk mass gatherings. With Israel’s appetite for attacking at its peak, we figured it’s prudent to keep a low profile.”
