Tennis Roundup : Stomach Pains Cause Wilander to Withdraw From Paris Event
Mats Wilander, the world’s top-ranked player, withdrew from the the Paris Open 45 minutes before his first-round match because of the flu, and three seeded players were defeated Wednesday in the $1.1-million event.
Wilander, top seeded, said he was unable to play Amos Mansdorf of Israel because of fever and stomach problems that have bothered him periodically since Friday. Wearing heavy clothing and sweating during a 10-minute news conference, Wilander said: “I feel like I look. I feel terrible.”
Second-seeded Tim Mayotte of the United States, ranked eighth in the world, had little trouble in his second-round match against 258th-ranked Eric Winogradsky of France, winning, 6-4, 6-1.
John Fitzgerald of Australia overwhelmed No. 7 Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, a clay-court specialist, 6-1, 6-2, in a first-round match, and No. 5 Thomas Muster of Austria and No. 6 Jonas Svensson of Sweden were also upset in second-round matches.
Muster lost to France’s Guy Forget, 6-3, 6-3, and Svensson fell to Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Steffi Graf and Pam Shriver scored straight-set routs to reach the quarterfinals of the $250,000 Midland Group Championships at Brighton, England.
Graf, the West German winner of the Grand Slam and Olympic gold medal, defeated Dutch left-hander Hester Witvoet, 6-1, 6-1. Shriver beat Italy’s Laura Garrone, 6-0, 6-0.
