NAACP Official Ordered to Retract Bush Endorsement
COLUMBUS, Ohio — NAACP Executive Director Benjamin Hooks today ordered the head of the Columbus chapter to retract an endorsement of Republican presidential candidate George Bush or face immediate suspension.
Columbus chapter President Melanie Mitchell said in a statement praising Bush on Wednesday that the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People “does not give political endorsements . . . (but) we must offer support to those persons who hold political offices, or are seeking such offices, whose ideals, activities, practices or policies are in the best interest of minorities.”
In a news release issued from NAACP headquarters in Baltimore today, Hooks said Mitchell has been “directed to issue a public statement repudiating, in its entirety, this position immediately. . . . Failure to do so will result in your immediate suspension.”
She was given until the end of the day to comply.
