San Diego’s redevelopment agency has been awarded a $2.4-million grant to help pay for construction of a 197-room, single-room-occupancy hotel, Mayor Maureen O’Connor has announced.
The grant from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will pay for part of the cost of Harbor Place Inn, a $7.4-million SRO planned for the 500 block of 2nd Avenue in the Marina redevelopment area.
The hotel, which will contain one level of underground parking, includes 40 units set aside for low-income people for at least the next 25 years. The rest of the units will cost $355 to $400 a month.
“This grant is important because it allows us to build additional, badly needed low-income single-room occupancy units downtown,” O’Connor said Tuesday. “SRO’s are a vital cog in getting homeless persons off of the street.”
