Lesbian Gives Phone Book a Karate Chop for Ignoring Gays
NEW YORK — A lesbian karate expert today chopped a Manhattan Yellow Pages book in half in a protest against the phone company’s refusal to give homosexuals a category of their own in the directory.
Several elected officials, along with homosexual supporters, gathered at City Hall to protest NYNEX’s decision against providing a “gay and lesbian organizations” listing in the Yellow Pages.
They said the company’s slogan, “If it’s out there, it’s in here,” does not apply to them.
To dramatize their point, Joan Byron, a member of the Brooklyn women’s Martial Arts Club, chopped a directory in half with one blow.
Manhattan Assemblyman Jerry Nadler, in a letter signed by about 20 elected officials, said he has asked NYNEX Chairman Delbert Staley for a meeting to discuss the issue.
