Control Tower Fire Halts Flights at Dallas Airport
GRAPEVINE, Tex. — An electrical fire broke out in the control tower at Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport today, temporarily suspending operations and diverting flights to other airports for about an hour.
The fire, which broke out during the noon rush--one of the busiest times of day for air travel--forced evacuation of the tower at the nation’s fourth-busiest airport.
One employee suffered minor burn injuries, officials said.
The fire at the base of the Federal Aviation Administration tower was extinguished within minutes, they said.
“There are no aircraft at this time moving on the airport, but there is no safety concern. We are working on restoring” flights, an airport spokeswoman said.
Al Becker of American Airlines said flights were being diverted to airports as far as 400 miles away, including Abilene, Lubbock and Amarillo in Texas and to Tulsa, Okla.
