Pico Rivera : Center Construction Begins

The city has broken ground for the Pico Rivera Senior Center and Art Center, a $1.74-million project expected to be finished next summer.

The 16,484-square-foot center will be the new site for the city’s senior meal service and will include game rooms, a television room and activity rooms.

Pico Rivera has a smaller senior center in the northern part of the city, but the location is inconvenient for seniors who live in the central and southern parts of town, said city spokesman Bill Schlapper. The meal service will continue at the original senior center until the new center opens.

About 10,000 of Pico Rivera’s 60,000 residents are age 60 and older, Schlapper said, and about 1,000 senior citizens are involved in the city’s five senior clubs.

The art center will occupy about 2,400 square feet of the building on Mines Avenue east of Rosemead Boulevard. The Pico Rivera Art Assn.’s building was demolished last year, and the group has been holding exhibits at Miller School since then.

A combination of federal, state and local money is being used to pay for the center. The Hale Corp. of Monrovia is the general contractor for the project.
