NHL Roundup : Toronto Finds Montreal Inviting
Vincent Damphousse and Daniel Marois of the Toronto Maple Leafs are natives of Montreal, so they felt right at home when they played the Canadiens Monday night at Montreal’s Forum.
Damphousse scored 3 goals for the first time in his NHL career, and Marois, a rookie, had 2 assists and a goal as the Maple Leafs beat the Canadiens, 6-2.
“The puck will be one of my favorite souvenirs,” said Damphousse, referring to the one with which he scored his third goal. “I’ve always dreamed of doing something like that here.”
The Maple Leafs, who had lost 5 in a row to Montreal, took a 3-0 lead in the first period. Derek Laxdal and Damphousse both scored their fourth goals of the season and Dan Daoust his first.
Edmonton 3, Minnesota 3--Dave Gagner scored at 7:39 of the third period as the North Stars came back from a 3-1 second-period deficit for the tie at Edmonton.
The North Stars dominated the opening period, outshooting the Oilers, 14-3, but emerged with only a 1-1 tie.
Brian MacLellan opened the scoring at 8:05, knocking a loose puck past Oiler goalie Grant Fuhr. Defenseman Charlie Huddy tied the score at 14:12 when he wheeled in from the blue line and sent a low backhand shot through a maze of legs and past goalie Jon Casey.
The Oilers took a 2-1 lead at 2:47 of the second period when Normand Lacombe popped a loose puck high for his fourth goal of the season. The goal was scored seconds after Minnesota’s Dino Ciccarelli had an apparent goal called back for directing the puck in the net with his skate.
Former King Martin Gelinas, at 18 the league’s youngest player, scored his first NHL goal to lift the Oilers to a 3-1 lead at 10:08 of the second period.
