Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega offered to free 39 anti-government protesters if President Reagan releases Puerto Ricans jailed for fighting to sever their island’s ties to Washington, the official daily Barricada said in Managua. Ortega previously said he could not order the release of the 39, arrested in July at a violent rally in Nandaime, because this would constitute interference in the judicial system. “If he (Reagan) wants us to release the Nandaime prisoners, then he should free the true fighters for the independence (of Puerto Rico),” Barricada quoted Ortega as saying. Several Puerto Ricans have been jailed for violent protests against alleged U.S. imperialism in Puerto Rico.
