Local News in Brief : Ground Breaking for Cancer Unit
Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance will hold ground-breaking ceremonies today at 11 a.m. for a radiation therapy unit for cancer patients. The $800,000 unit being built between the hospital and the Center for Health Education is funded by Palos Verdes Estates resident Hazel E. Rauch in memory of her husband, Edward P. Rauch. It will house a linear accelerator that generates X-rays to shrink or kill tumors.
The radiation facility, which will open next June, is part of a hospital plan for a comprehensive cancer treatment unit, according to a spokeswoman. An 8-bed inpatient cancer unit will open Oct. 20.
