Esperanza 3, La Mirada 0--Kevin Leon kicked a 37-yard field goal with 8:32 left in the fourth quarter to give Esperanza (4-0) the victory at La Mirada. Leon’s kick capped a 58-yard, 7-play drive by the Aztecs and was set up by a 45-yard run by junior running back Lance Brown. Brown’s key run came with the Aztecs facing a third-and-11 on their own 41.
If there was a star in the game, it was Leon. The senior not only kicked the game-winner but constantly kept La Mirada deep in its own territory with his punting, including a 77-yard punt from his own end zone in the third quarter.
La Mirada (2-2) got its best opportunity to score just before halftime when defensive end Willie Agustin recovered a fumble for the Matadores at the Esperanza 24. La Mirada failed to capitalize on the break, however, when running back John Jones fumbled at the Aztec 15 two plays later, and Esperanza’s Dan Mondragon recovered.
