High School Roundup : Valdez Paces Camarillo to Easy Victory

The Camarillo boys’ cross-country team has struggled this season, but one would never know it judging from the score of Thursday’s Marmonte League dual meet against Thousand Oaks at Camarillo Grove Park.

Powered by Abe Valdez’s victory, the Scorpions (4-0, 3-0 in league competition) rolled to a 22-36 victory over the Lancers, the fifth-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A Division.

Valdez’s time of 15 minutes, 28 seconds established a 3-mile course record, breaking the previous best of 15:51 set by Valdez and teammates Shawn Goetzinger and Chad Malesich earlier this season.

Malesich (15:58) and Goetzinger (16:05) placed third and fourth Thursday behind runner-up Mike Williamson (15:41) of Thousand Oaks.

In other boys’ meets:

Burbank 26, Hart 29--Todd Lewis and Mike Sanchez finished 1-2 as the Bulldogs upset the Indians in the Foothill League meet at Griffith Park.

Lewis ran 15:47 over the 3-mile course and Sanchez clocked 16:02 as Burbank handed Hart only its second loss in its past 26 dual meets.

Newbury Park 21, Simi Valley 34; Newbury Park 22, Royal 35; Simi Valley 27, Royal 30--Mike Esparza led Newbury Park to victory in the Marmonte League double-dual meet at Peppertree Park in Newbury Park.

Esparza, the fourth-place finisher in last year’s Southern Section 4-A championships, ran 15:59 over the 3-mile course. Teammate Brett Bechthold placed third in 16:30 as the Panthers improved to 3-1 in league competition.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Thousand Oaks 24, Camarillo 31--Sonja Duerr ran 19:42 over the 3-mile course to lead the Lancers in the Marmonte League dual meet at Camarillo Grove Park.

Newbury Park 17, Royal 42; Newbury Park 18, Simi Valley, no score; Royal 20, Simi Valley, no score--Amy Nesbitt and Christina Penilla placed first and second as the Panthers rolled to victory in the Marmonte League double-dual meet at Peppertree Park.

Nesbitt ran 19:38 over the 3-mile course and Penilla clocked 20:15 for Newbury Park (4-0 in league meets).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Simi Valley, 15-9, 15-3, 15-8--Amy Chellevold had 11 kills and Jamie Heggen 6 to lead the Lancers (8-0, 4-0 in league play) over the Pioneers (2-2 in league play) in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Calabasas d. Louisville, 15-13, 15-13, 14-16, 11-15, 16-14--Setter Shari Sakamoto had 15 digs and 5 kills for Calabasas (3-2) in the nonleague match at Calabasas.

Cleveland d. Hollywood, 15-5, 16-14--Nancy Nicholls had 8 kills and Cheryl Aschenbach added 2 for the Cavaliers in a nonleague match at Cleveland.

Hart d. Saugus, 15-5, 10-15, 15-4, 15-10--Nicole Anthony and Kristen Wissig each had 7 kills to lead the Indians in a nonleague match.

Campbell Hall d. Buckley, 15-1, 15-12, 15-7--Campbell Hall raised its record to 4-0 in Delphic League play with a win at Buckley.

For Campbell Hall (6-1), which has won 26 of its past 28 league games, Abby Ackroyd had 4 kills, 19 serving points and 4 aces. Teammate Jeanelle Meskimen had 8 assists and 17 serving points.

Bishop Diego d. La Reina, 7-15, 15-11, 15- 11, 4-15, 15-13--Carolyn Russo had 26 kills for La Reina (5-3, 3-1 in league play) in a Tri-Valley League match.

Royal d. Channel Islands, 15-1, 15-3, 15-3--Alison Bantel had 6 kills and Laura Perez had 12 service points in the third game as Royal won the Marmonte League match.

Reseda d. Marshall, 15-11, 17-15--Middle blocker Jennifer Marzahl had 10 kills to lead the Regents to a nonleague win.

WATER POLO

Harvard 10, Marina 3--Justin Cheen scored 4 goals and Jed Simon and Tim Pennington had 2 each to lead the Saracens in the opening round of the South Coast tournament at Tustin High.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Louisville 11, Chaminade 7--Led by the singles play of Teresa Raymundo, Lori Constan and Liz Hren, Louisville defeated Chaminade for the first time in five years, in a San Fernando Valley League match.
