A Japanese college student was killed and his companion critically injured early Thursday morning when their sports car ran off Miramar Road and overturned.
The accident occurred at 2:13 a.m. in the 8600 block of Miramar Road. Detective Robert Harris said it appeared that the whoever was driving lost control at a high speed. The car slammed into a concrete retaining wall, struck a parked tractor-trailer truck, became airborne and vaulted over four more trucks, Harrison said, adding that both men were ejected from the car.
Masato Tsukida, a 24-year-old student at United States International University, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was believed to have been the passenger, Harrison said.
Takeshi Takayama, 21, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. He was listed in critical condition late Thursday with a head injury, hospital spokeswoman Lynn Morra said, adding that Takayama’s family members in Japan are on their way to the United States.
