BASEBALL

The La Mesa Pony League team hit four home runs and advanced to the championship round of the Pony League World Series with a 10-0 victory over Miami at Washington, Pa.

La Mesa, which has hit nine home runs in five series games, will play undefeated Seoul, South Korea, tonight. La Mesa needs to win tonight and Friday to win the championship.

Against Miami, La Mesa had 11 hits, including home runs by Matt Villaescusa, Wynter Phoenix, Bill Dakouris and Saul Rodriquez. Winning pitcher Jason Eskridge allowed one hit in five innings.

FOOTBALL

San Diego State held its first full-contact workout Wednesday without incurring any severe injuries, trainer Don Kaverman said.

The trainer said senior tight end Kerry Reed-Martin might have a partially dislocated kneecap and running back Daryl Crawford suffered bruised thigh. Kaverman said Reed-Martin, who led the Aztecs in receiving last season with 49 catches for 719 yards, likely will be X-rayed today before a decision will be made about when he will resume practicing.

Other players held out of part or all of practice included inside linebacker Lee Brannon (sore shoulder), offensive tackle Brad Edwards (sprained ankle), linebacker Scott Kilgore (bruised neck nerve) and tight end Judd Rachow (thigh muscle bruise).

Coach Denny Stolz said that Doug Blanchard, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, has been moved to the defensive line. Blanchard, who sat out his freshman season because he failed to meet NCAA eligibility requirements, had been working with the offensive linemen until he strained a hip muscle Monday.

BASEBALL

The San Diego Stars, a team of local 12-year-olds, defeated China, 4-1, and are the only undefeated team in their bracket at the International Boys’ Friendship Tournament in Beijing, China.

The Stars are 4-0 with one game remaining in round-robin play. They previously defeated teams from Denver, the Philippines and Japan.

GOLF

Phil Mickelson of San Diego shot his second consecutive 2-under-par 70 despite bogeys on three of the last four holes to take a 5-shot lead halfway through the American Junior Golf Assn. Tournament of Champions at Roswell, Ga.

Mickelson is trying to win the title for the third year in a row. Pat Moore of Urbandale, Iowa, is second at 71-145.
