Carlsbad
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter Wednesday after the truck he was driving collided with two cars, killing the driver of one and injuring two other people, Carlsbad police said.
The driver, Martin Herrera Castenada, 30, of Oceanside, was arrested by Carlsbad police. He was also booked on suspicion of possession of an illegal weapon that was found in the truck, Officer Steven Clary said.
Herrera was eastbound on La Costa Avenue about half a mile east of Interstate 5 at 3:50 p.m. when the truck crossed over the center line and hit a passenger vehicle head-on, police said.
The car’s driver, Kermit Reid Weyland of Leucadia, was killed instantly, a coroner’s spokesman said. His wife, Maxine Weyland, who was a passenger in the car, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Palomar Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition, police said.
After hitting the first car, police said, Herrera’s truck struck a vehicle driven by Shirley Meltzer, 61. Meltzer, of Leucadia, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where she was also in stable condition, police said.
Herrera was treated at Palomar for minor injuries.
