A man who was killed Tuesday night had been seen arguing with a woman shortly before he was shot, Oceanside police said.

Witnesses reported that John Joseph Hall, 32, was having an argument with a woman on a staircase leading from Pacific Street to the beach, at 8:45 p.m., said police spokesman Bob George.

Some witnesses said they saw the woman with a gun, then heard two or three shots, George said. Hall reportedly staggered halfway down the stairs then collapsed near the beach. He was reported dead at the scene.

Police were still seeking the unidentified woman Wednesday night, who was described only as having short hair.
