Dukakis made one comment in his acceptance speech that makes me think he doesn’t have total confidence in his ability to govern. Dukakis said he selected Sen. Lloyd Bentsen as his running mate partly because if he is elected President he wants a vice president who will stop him when he starts to make a mistake. He thinks Bentsen will do that. It strikes me that Dukakis wants someone to play the role of a daddy. He wants someone to say to him if he starts to do wrong, “No, my son. You mustn’t do that.”
