A new bounce on the Great Inglewood-Pontiac Basketball Playoff Bet.
For those still keeping score: There’s been a new development in the Great Inglewood-Pontiac Basketball Playoff Bet.
Inglewood Mayor Edward Vincent has decided to buy the silver Pontiac Grand Prix SE that he won as a loaner for two weeks in a bet with Walter Moore, the mayor of Pontiac, Mich., home of the vanquished Detroit Pistons.
Vincent was awarded the car in a triumphant City Hall ceremony several weeks ago after the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Pistons for the NBA championship. According to city spokesman Norman Cravens, Vincent decided to purchase the sleek, $17,500 car because he has been having mechanical trouble with the Cadillac he now drives.
Cravens reported that Vincent said he received a good deal from the Monterey Park Pontiac dealer who supplied the car “because it had been driven hard for two weeks.” But Cravens did not know how much Vincent paid. The mayor could not be reached for comment.
City officials said the mayor is going to place his personalized “INGLWD1” license plate on the Pontiac.
As to the second part of the Great Bet: Cravens said Moore sent Inglewood officials a letter this week confirming that a shipment of light bulbs manufactured by a Pontiac company is on its way to Inglewood, where the bulbs will be installed in City Hall.
If the Lakers had lost, Vincent had promised to personally present the Lakers’ “Say No to Drugs” video to the Pontiac City Council and throw in a basket of fruit.
