The Boston Red Sox, moving to strengthen their starting pitching after a recent injury to Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd, Friday acquired veteran right-hander Mike Boddicker from the Baltimore Orioles for minor league outfielder Brady Anderson and minor league right-hander Curt Schilling.

Boddicker, who will be 31 on Aug. 23, was 6-12 with a 3.86 earned-run average in 21 starts with the Orioles. He will report to Boston today and is the likely starter Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

“He’s a winner,” Boston General Manager Lou Gorman said. “He’ll come over here and help us out a whole deal. There were five other clubs talking to them, and we’re glad to get him.”

Boyd, who threw only 12 pitches Tuesday against the Texas Rangers before leaving the game, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of tendinitis.

Anderson, 24, who batted .230 in 41 games with Boston earlier this season, was hitting .287 with Pawtucket, R.I., of the International League.

Schilling, 21, was 8-5 with a 2.97 ERA at New Britain, Conn., of the Eastern League.
