Knight-Ridder Inc., publisher of the Miami Herald and the Philadelphia Inquirer, said its earnings rose 4.6% to $44.9 million in the second quarter despite weakness in newspaper advertising. The company attributed the improvement to a lower tax rate. The Miami-based company’s pretax profit, however, declined to $74.8 million from $78.9 million. Revenue rose to $544.6 million from $526.9 million.
